Savor the rich scents of the season

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:23:58 GMT

When you think about your favorite things this time of year, what are the scents that top the list? For so many, the quintessential fragrance of autumn is pumpkin. But there’s also the always-comforting and familiar smell of apple with cinnamon — in a pie, maybe, or a crisp. Or a plum tart spiced with vanilla and cardamom.I also love earthy and musky fragrances this time of year — delights like tobacco and cedar, and sandalwood.Whatever your personal preferences, the latest fragrance potions of the season are just the thing to warm up the chill in the air — whether you use them as a body spray, as a lotion or soap/body wash, spritz your bed linens, your bathroom, as a diffuser throughout your home, or in your car. The point is to surround yourself with the scent of coziness.A favorite is Guerlain’s new-this-season L’art & La Mature Tobacco Honey ($380 for 100ml on guerlain.com). It’s an unusual balance of typically masculine (tobacco) and feminine (honey) scents, and that  wonder...

Thanks to prolific, award-winning screenwriter and creator Taylor Sheridan (“Yellowstone”), the Western continues to thrive with Sunday’s new anthology series, “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” starring David Oyelowo as the first Black US Marshal west of the Mississippi.Sheridan and Oyelowo executive-produced this initial entry which was created and written by showrunner Chad Feehan, 45.“Lawmen,” which premieres on Paramount+, covers in eight episodes the amazing trajectory of Reeves’ storied career beginning in 1862 when as a slave he’s conscripted to fight in the Confederate Army. He escaped and spent years living with indigenous tribes before making over 3,000 arrests in law enforcement.“I grew up in Fort Worth, Texas,” Feehan began in a Zoom interview. “I heard stories about Bass as a kid but they were always akin to the gunslinger tales of pursuing hardened criminals in the Wild West.“For whatever reason, those stories embedded themselves in my consciousness. Over the yea...

Dear Abby: Marriage to abusive drunk a nightmare

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:23:58 GMT

Dear Abby: I’ve been married to my husband for almost 43 years. We haven’t had sex in more than 10 years. He is a nasty drunk, which has grown worse. He is emotionally abusive and calls me lazy and fat.He hurt his right shoulder three years ago and refused to seek medical attention for it. Two years ago, he had all his teeth extracted. Since then, he has lost at least 50 pounds, which, unfortunately, I seem to have gained. He drinks until he’s falling-down drunk at least twice a week, and he then becomes nasty with me and our daughter. What should I do? — Hopeless in TexasDear Hopeless: The relationship you have with your husband isn’t a healthy one. Start getting yourself in better physical shape. Once you begin to take care of yourself, the better you will feel physically and emotionally. Begin attending Al-Anon meetings. There are many in almost every community. While Cleveland’s Deshaun Watson is now expected to return to the lineup tomorrow, the Rams’ Matthew Stafford is now reportedly sitting out this week. The Giants’ Daniel Jones is also expected to return, but that will not help New York much with the ruling out of star tight end Darren Waller.Other players ruled out on Saturday include Arizona RB Emari Demercado, Chargers RB Joshua Palmer and Washington WR Curtis Samuel.ORIGINAL POST: noon WednesdayReplacing a productive quarterback with a torn Achilles’ tendon can be tough for a professional football team like, say, your Minnesota Vikings. But losing someone like Kirk Cousins at the midway point of the fantasy football season can be equally crushing. The Vikings are turning to rookie Jaren Hall and recently acquired journeyman Josh Dobbs in the hopes of salvaging their so-far 4-4 campaign. It’s only getting worse for the San Jose Sharks. Are there any answers left?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:23:58 GMT

SAN JOSE – Now, the San Jose Sharks are only one loss away from making NHL history in the most undesirable way.For three-plus weeks, the Sharks have juggled forward lineups and defense pairs, gone from one goalie to the other, scratched some players, promoted others, moved centers and wingers up and down the lineup. Maybe they’ve burned incense a time or two.None of it has resulted in a win. In fact, it’s only gotten worse.Saturday, the Sharks allowed two first-period goals before they completely unraveled in what became a 10-2 loss to Erik Karlsson and the Pittsburgh Penguins before an announced sellout crowd of 17,435 at SAP Center.Down 2-0, the Sharks allowed five even-strength goals in less than nine minutes in the second as they were sent hurtling toward their 11th straight loss, matching an NHL record to start a season.San Jose is now 0-10-1, as it became just the fourth team in NHL history, and the third since 2005 when the shootout era began, to lose their first 11 games. CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Saturday he would protest a lack of transparency in China’s treatment of a detained Australian democracy blogger when meeting with President Xi Jinping in Beijing during a trade-focused state visit. The detention of Yang Hengjun without conviction for almost five years will be one of the topics raised with Xi when they meet in the Great Hall of the People on Monday.Yang is being held in a Beijing detention center awaiting the verdict of a 2021 closed-door trial on espionage charges. The 58-year-old’s family fears he is dying.“I’ll be saying that Dr. Yang’s case needs to be resolved and I’ll be speaking about his human rights, the nature of the detention and the failure to have transparent processes,” Albanese told reporters in the northern Australian city of Darwin hours before he flew to Shanghai. The Chinese Foreign Ministry this week defended Yang’s prosecution, saying his case had been handled in strict accordance wit...
