Top five Earth Day events in the Bay Area this weekend

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:08:07 GMT

By many measures, the Bay Area’s environment is a lot cleaner that it was on the first Earth Day in 1970.The air is much less smoggy, cannery wastes aren’t dumped in San Francisco Bay, the pesticide DDT is banned, vehicles emit much less tailpipe pollution, electric cars are expanding in number, leaded gasoline is long gone, recycling programs are widely used, and endangered species — from bald eagles to gray whales — are on the rebound. But there are new challenges that weren’t around 53 years ago when former Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a San Jose State University graduate, joined forces with Denis Hayes, a former Stanford student body president, to found Earth Day. The Cardinals haven’t ruled out anything.
