Venturelli powers Taunton past King Philip in Hockomock League softball showdown TAUNTON – In what seems to become an annual affair, Taunton and King Philip faced off for Hockomock Kelley-Rex Division supremacy midway through the regular season. Both teams came in undefeated on the season as the Tigers (9-0, 8-0) outlasted the Warriors (10-1, 7-1), 3-1, in what turned out to be a pitchers’ duel.Sam Lincoln picked up the win with a complete game three-hitter while first-year hurler McCoy Walsh finished with 10 strikeouts after the big game jitters got the best of her early in the game. All of Taunton’s runs came off the bat of Ava Venturelli as the Louisville-bound outfielder crushed two home runs in her first two at bats to give Taunton the 3-0 lead after three innings of play. Venturelli’s first blast was a two-run shot that cleared the 220-foot marker in center field with no problem.Venturelli followed it up with her second homer on a 2-2 pitch to left center that was also a no-doubter in the third inning to give Lincoln all the support necessary for the win.“Th...

Triston Casas comes through in clutch as Red Sox beat Blue Jays 8-3 Triston Casas needed a game like this.Mired in a terrible slump to start the season and coming into the game 0 for his last 11, the rookie stepped to the plate three straight innings with a chance to either tie the game, put the Red Sox ahead or otherwise do serious damage. He delivered with back-to-back game-tying RBI singles and then crushed a fly ball to the warning track in the sixth that on a slightly less windy night would have been an easy grand slam.“That was one of my best swings of the season, honestly,” Casas said of the deep fly out. “Everything evens out, the baseball gods know everything and they got me that hit that last at bat. … I’m confident everything will even out and I’m just doing my best to swing at good pitches and barrel them up as often as possible.”Casas finished 3 for 5 with two RBI, helping power a somewhat odd but still decisive 8-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. With the win Boston has now won five straight an...

"A time to remember": That's the message wrapped around the hearts of San Diego law enforcement Wednesday. “When tragedy strikes, our families are the ones who are left behind to accept the sacrifice made," shared Chief Aaron Heitke with the U.S. Border Patrol. That reminder was symbolized by the empty chairs lined in front of the podium. One of them honoring Agent Daniel H. Salazar who died May 13, 2022, after he was fatally injured while conducting line watch operations, after his service vehicle rolled off a steep embankment adjacent to the international border. When asked about the legacy of Agent Salazar, one of his closest friends and colleagues Agent Dylan Robinson was at a loss for words. "I can’t even explain it. It’s a different kind of pain. He was my best friend...we were inseparable," Robinson said. The other person honored was State Par...

Science behind surfing: New exhibit to debut at California Surf Museum OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Surfing is a lifestyle in San Diego, and a new exhibition at the California Surf Museum will explore the science behind the sport. The multi-media exhibit uses charts, diagrams, photographs, art and video monitors to explain the energy, tides, types of surf breaks and conditions and custodianship of the oceans, the California Surf Museum said in a release Wednesday. “While modern science is forever looking for explanations of what goes on in the natural world, modern day surfers have been at the ready to apply this knowledge where they can in advancing in the art of riding waves,” said Jim Kempton, President of the California Surf Museum’s Board of Directors. “As early as the mid-1940s, California surfing trailblazer Bob Simmons, a former Cal Tech student, was consulting hydrographic coastal navigation charts to discover formally unknown surf sites. He also was applying technological advances found in a Navy, MIT-led, World War II study intended to improve the sp...
