Why Jaylen Brown, Celtics are emphasizing defense at start of training camp Long before this Celtics training camp started, Jaylen Brown wanted to make something clear. The Celtics star, accepting his record-breaking contract extension back in July, was asked about the team’s championship expectations. This was before Jrue Holiday was acquired, but shortly after Marcus Smart was traded. Brown went out of his way to emphasize defense.“I want to make sure that’s where we hang our hats this year and that starts with me, that starts with Jayson (Tatum),” Brown said. “With Marcus gone, we don’t want our defensive identity to go out the door as well, so we have to really emphasize that at the start of training camp.”Brown’s messaging has stayed consistent, and there’s been a clear emphasis on the defensive end to start training camp. He talked at media day about maintaining the energy on defense. So why has Brown felt the need to make improved defense a goal this season? It all started with Smart’s departure.“Before we got Jrue, (I) wanted to make sure we didn̵...

Movie review: ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ an exhausting, unnecessary reboot

Movie review: ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ an exhausting, unnecessary reboot Once again, David Gordon Green and Danny McBride have taken it upon themselves to futz about with a 1970s horror classic at the behest of horror uber-producer Jason Blum. So far their track record ranges from “pretty good” (“Halloween”), to “should’ve never seen the light of day” (“Halloween Kills”), to “huh?” (“Halloween Ends”), so expectations should be riding low for their take on the 1973 William Friedkin classic “The Exorcist,” now re-imagined as “lega-sequel” “The Exorcist: Believer.” Keep those expectations planted firmly in the gutter because after this encounter, you’ll likely be left thinking, “can Pazuzu just give it a rest?”“The Exorcist: Believer” is an exhausting affair, an unrelenting film that attempts to cover up its lack of shock and suspense with a kind of cinematic bludgeoning: a battering about the face and head delivered via smash cuts, jump scares, overlapping sound design and chaotic camerawork. Yet despite all this stylistic violence, all the demonic histrio...

With the 31 other NHL teams now passing, the trio now joins a Barracuda team that opens its regular season next Friday at home against the Rockford IceHogs. The Barracuda also plays an exhibition game against the Bakersfield Condors tonight, but Lindblom, Carpenter, and Peterson will not play.If nothing else, by having all three remain in San Jose, the Sharks now enjoy some greater organizational depth up front should injuries begin to affect the NHL club.Of the three forwards, Peterson might have been the likeliest to get claimed because of his production last season and relatively inexpensive salary cap hit.Peterson, 24, was...
