Sean Payton saw basketball highlights sent by a friend and envisioned the next hooper-turned-tight end.Jimmy Graham Version 2.0, maybe.A red zone dynamo and matchup nightmare in the passing game.“No football experience,” Payton recalled. “He was a basketball player.”Well, Payton may have missed on the eventual role Chris Manhertz, the kid in the video, would fill, but not on the football chops.Eight years after a rookie try out, they’re reconnected.Manhertz, now 31, spent 2015 on New Orleans’ practice squad before Carolina scooped him up early in the 2016 season and kept him through 2020. Then he spent the past two years in Jacksonville before signing a two-year deal with the Broncos in free agency. His specialty is not 50/50 balls, the football equivalent of rebounding, but instead blocking.“I would say within the last five years, he has been one of the better run-blocking tight ends,” Payton said. How did that happen? Tupperware shares are up 850%. Stay away from them

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:39:00 GMT

Since mid-July, shares of Tupperware -- yes, that Tupperware -- have soared by about 850%. On Friday, they climbed another 35%.What the heck is happening? And should you seek a piece of the action?Let's answer that second question first: No. Hard no. Keep your distance. As for the first question, Tupperware declared a few months ago that it might go out of business. The company carries lots of debt, is running out of cash and faces plenty of competition on the food-storage front. That was good enough for self-serving online traders, who promptly made Tupperware the latest "meme stock."A meme stock is one that takes off like a rocket as skeevy investors run a pump-and-dump scheme to boost a stock's price and then unload their holdings on unsuspecting latecomers.Tupperware is getting that treatment. The meme element notwithstanding, this remains a business in distress. Even though the company this week announced moves to restructure its debt, its long-term prospects remain unchanged.Moreo...
