St. Louis protest targets use of ankle monitors, passport confiscation for asylum seekers

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 22:59:49 GMT

When Guatemalan-native Adelaida crossed the Mexican-American border at McAllen, Texas, to seek asylum, immigration officials told her very little before they attached a GPS monitor to her ankle.“I was scared because never in my life had I seen an ankle monitor,” said Adelaida, who asked that her last name be withheld out of fear of retribution for speaking out. “They told me that when I arrived at the immigration office in St. Louis they would take it off. But that’s not what happened.” She wore the monitor for a year and two months before her attorney made the case for its removal. The monitor made it difficult for the single mother of two children to get jobs at restaurants and hotels, so she ended up turning to construction work. She was also required to turn in her passport, which meant she had no form of identification, and had to be available one full day a week for a home visit. Both made it difficult to keep a job, culminating when the ankle monitor caught on a piece...

Opinion: As Gov. Polis once said, local control of land use matters

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 22:59:49 GMT

With all due respect to Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, we recently examined with great interest some wisdom that he provided before he took office. We take note of some apparent contradictions that relate to a current bill under debate in the Colorado Legislature. In 2015, then-Congressman Jared Polis said, “Local planning involves widespread citizen input and broad stakeholder involvement. When addressing contentious issues, local governments have more opportunities for public participation than a state or federal government. As such, land use tools allow local governments to act consistently with their constituents’ expectations.”We could not say it better ourselves. Ironically, it is the same Jared Polis who is the impetus of Senate Bill 213, a contentious land use bill that would greatly reduce local control. In some cases, the “reduction” would in fact lead to the elimination of that control. The heart of any community is the people who live there, who robustly engage th...

Since then, the Evil Dead world has been thriving. There have been sequels, a remake, and a boisterous TV series (starring fan fave Bruce Campbell) that has let loose upon the Earth more Deadites, Kandarian demons, and Sumarian Books of the Dead than you can shake a chainsaw at. And now, in the year of our lord 2023, we have the new chapter in the series, Evil Dead Rise, which promises enough carnage to make previous excursions look like kiddie romps. So does it make good on that promise? And does it tell a compelling story? Yep…Written and directed by Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground), Evil Dead Rise takes Raimi’s Deadites from rural cabins to an apartment building in Los Angeles where a strange yet oddly familiar book is unearthed yet again.
