The Alberta Energy Regulator says it won’t reconsider approvals for Suncor Energy to expand an oilsands mine into a wetland once considered for environmental protection. The regulator released its ruling today in response to a request that was made last spring by the Alberta Wilderness Association.Suncor had been given the OK to expand its Fort Hills mine into the McClelland Lake wetland complex, a large intact wetland that lies partly within the company’s lease. The regulator paused those approvals while it examined the association’s concerns over Suncor’s plans to mine half the wetland and protect the rest with a 14-kilometre underground wall up to 70 metres deep. The decision allows the original approvals to stand. Scientists have calculated the entire wetland stores between the equivalent of between eight million and 35 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. The wetland is estimated to overlay a billion barrels of bitumen. The Canadian PressMayor says release of child sex offender Brian Abrosimo in Surrey is ‘outrageous’

SURREY, B.C. — Surrey’s mayor says it’s “outrageous” that a sex offender who abducted and assaulted an 11-year-old girl in 2004 has been released in the city, which she says has more children per capita than anywhere in British Columbia.Surrey RCMP issued a public warning about Brian Abrosimo, 61, who they say is at high risk to reoffend after his release from prison on Thursday.Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says it’s “reprehensible” the child sex predator was released into the community and she’s asking residents to stay extra vigilant.Abrosimo pleaded guilty in 2005 to using his van to run down the 11-year-old and a teenage friend while they were riding bicycles in Langley, dragging the younger girl screaming into his vehicle then sexually assaulting her.He also admitted abducting, handcuffing and sexually assaulting a sex worker at gunpoint around the same time.Police say Abrosimo completed an 18-year prison sentence for sexual assault, kidnapping,...Nicaragua’s Miss Universe title win exposes deep political divide in the Central American country

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Nicaragua’s increasingly isolated and repressive government thought it had scored a rare PR victory last week when Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios won the Miss Universe competition. But the “legitimate joy and pride” President Daniel Ortega’s government expressed in a statement Sunday after the win quickly turned to angry condemnation, after it emerged that Palacios graduated from a college that was the center of 2018 protests against the regime — and apparently participated in the marches.Ordinary Nicaraguans — who are largely forbidden to protest or carry the national flag in marches — took advantage of the Saturday night Miss Universe win as a rare opportunity to celebrate in the streets.Their use of the blue-and-white national flag, as opposed to Ortega’s red-and-black Sandinista banner, didn’t sit well with the government.Palacios’ victory — along with photos she posted on Facebook in 2018 of herself participating in the pr...Woman alleges Jamie Foxx sexually assaulted her at New York bar, actor says it ‘never happened’

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman has alleged in a lawsuit that actor, singer and comedian Jamie Foxx sexually assaulted her at a rooftop bar in New York in 2015, an incident the actor says “never happened.” The lawsuit filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Manhattan by a woman known in the documents only as Jane Doe alleges that Foxx rubbed her breasts and groped her under her pants against her will. The suit says she and a friend were seated at a table next to Foxx’s at Catch NYC in 2015. The woman’s asked Foxx for a photo, and the two women took several pictures with him, the suit says. It says that afterward, he began complimenting her “super model body” and told her she looked like the actor Gabrielle Union. He then grabbed her by the arm and took her to a secluded area, where he put both hands under her crop top and felt her breasts, the suits says. She tried to pull away from Foxx as he reached into her pants with his hands and touched her genitals, the suit also allege...Latest news
