PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) — Ira “Ike” Schab had just showered, put on a clean sailor’s uniform and closed his locker aboard the USS Dobbin when he heard a call for a fire rescue party. He went topside to see the USS Utah capsizing and Japanese planes in the air. He scurried back below deck to grab boxes of ammunition and joined a daisy chain of sailors feeding shells to an anti-aircraft gun up above. He remembers being only 140 pounds (63.50 kilograms) as a 21-year-old, but somehow finding the strength to lift boxes weighing almost twice that. “We were pretty startled. Startled and scared to death,” Schab, now 103, said at his home in Beaverton, Oregon, where he lives with his daughter. “We didn’t know what to expect and we knew that if anything happened to us, that would be it.”Eighty-two years later, Schab plans to return to Pearl Harbor Thursday on the anniversary of the attack to remember the more than 2,300 servicemen killed. He’s expected to be one of just six surv...Climate talks shift into high gear. Now words and definitions matter at COP28

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The mood is about to shift, the hours grow longer and the already high sense of urgency somehow amp up even more as the United Nations climate summit heads into its final week.Every sentence, every word — especially those about the future elimination of planet-warming fossil fuels — will matter at the U.N. conference in oil-built Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Professional negotiators who have been working on getting options into shape will turn over their work to senior national officials, many at minister levels, who will have to make the tough political choices.“We’re heading into quite a political process, less access into the negotiating rooms, negotiations will go deep into the night, a number of nights,” said David Waskow, international climate initiative director for the World Resources Institute.Even with the hard work to come, some of those who are about to do it have this sense of optimism, especially because everyone has the d...Mild Pacific air heads our way; temps within striking distance of 60° Friday. Watch the "PINEAPPLE EXPRESS" at work—a persistent flow of moisture into a region meteorologists describe as an "ATMOSPHERIC RIVER" It's been drenching the Pacific Northwest in recent days, producing record rainfalls and abnormally mild temperature. This flood of abnormally mild, moist Pacific air with origins in the equatorial Pacific south of the Hawaiian Islands thousands of miles southwest of the U.S. West Coast, that's to bring Chicago unseasonably mild temps Thursday and Friday. This could include a near 60-degree high temp in portions of the Chicago area Friday. What you see here is a multi-day GOES WEST weather satellite animation produced by the folks at CIRA-RAMBB at Colorado State. This "movie" illustrates how persistent and targeted the flow of deep atmospheric moisture into the Pacific Northwest has been. Wave after wave of precipitation sweeps in—the rain intensity amplified by the flow's interaction with the West's mountains which act to lift and cool the air to satura...Nikola Jokic has career-worst shooting performance as Nuggets fall to Clippers in Jamal Murray’s return

No, Californians will not be receiving another round of economic stimulus checks - nor will other Americans, for that matter. The Internal Revenue Service is debunking a rumor widely shared on social media that claimed a fourth round of payments would be issued to residents of 10 states starting Nov. 30, ranging from $250 to several thousand dollars.Anthony Burke, a spokesperson with the IRS, told SFGATE that his office has received multiple calls about the rumor, and it's simply not true."There is no fourth round of [stimulus checks] from the Treasury Department," he told the news outlet. SAN FRANCISCO — The Warriors overcame a flat first half and turned out a 110-106 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night at Chase Center. After being down by as many as many as 11 to the bottom-feeding Trail Blazers, Golden State’s turning point came late in the third quarter. Portland’s young stars Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe were torching the Warriors, but Jonathan Kuminga’s entry into the game with just under five minutes left in the third countered Portland’s athleticism. In just under 16 minutes, Kuminga had 13 points and was a team-best plus-13 with two steals — including a pivotal one on Portland’s inbound pass that led to a Steph Curry 3-pointer that extended their lead to four.Related ArticlesGolden State Warriors | Warriors through 20 games: The good, the bad and the ugly Golden State Warriors | Chris Paul, Andrew Wiggins probable to play against Portland Golden State Warriors | ...Two arrested in connection with downtown Walnut Creek robbery, pistol-whipping

(KRON) -- The Bay Area Air Quality Management District received several complaints this week about "sewage-like odors" in the Point Richmond area. BAAQMD says the pungent smell comes from elevated hydrogen sulfide levels at the City of Richmond's Wastewater Treatment Plant. The air district measured the elevated levels at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday and completed an investigation of the facility two hours later. "The Air District is closely monitoring an odor issue from the City of Richmond’s wastewater treatment facility. The site has been conducting various onsite planned construction projects that may be the cause of recent rotten egg odors in the Point Richmond area." BAAQMD said.
